Explore underground Maastricht; a place where history comes to life! Join in a dark adventure in the Zonneberg Caves: No light, no sound, no smell, no radiation, no pollution, no mobile phone signal, no idea of time. Through a labyrinth that once comprised more than 20,000 corridors, an experienced guide takes you underground to see the names and drawings of people who worked here every day a few hundred years ago. Your Maastricht Underground guide will make sure you don't get lost in the man-made galleries, which once measured 230 km in total and now measure around 80 km. With a capacity of 50,000 people, the expansive cave network was able to provide shelter for many of Maastricht's residents during the Second World War. An evacuation area with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps, and many more facilities were all constructed underground, though never put into full use. Remnants of them can still be seen. Guided tours are organized at regular times all year round in the caves beneath St. Pietersberg hill. It is also possible to arrange group visits to this impressive location at a time to suit you.Â
